Dave one of the best and well thought out rants on the interwebs. I'll continue by saying 8th edition is a great game. 8th captures how the unit types its representing should fight. Its basic combat rules are elegant and makes each unit very role specific something that would be common of classical and medieval combat units. Calvary would be a strong clean up force or used to break a weakened enemy it would not smash headlong into a pike or shielded formation something that 8th accurately simulates without being boring. Magic I think they got right its an elegant system that was built to balance the game. 8th rule set is designed to work around large scale infantry based forced, it needed a way to punish giant horde infantry blocks, the result was access to unit deleting spells for many armies in basic lores. This was built so that if your opponent took a 4 block WoC army you had the potential to make them pay in the magic phase. The strength of the magic phase is mitigated by the fact that because of how charging works battle is joined by turn 3. The balance within the rule set exist, some armies are better suited to the style of 8th edition than others this is extremely true but it was true in 7th as well. As to a self comping game, I'd say 8th has a decent internal balance far stronger balance then its cousin 40k.

I think there was a lot hatred towards 8th edition because it so radically changed the game that had been changed by the players with an elaborate comp system. I also think that because of the changes to the game the financial aspect of it, namely many forces were rendered unplayable in the new system cannot be underestimated. Its a lot easier to say this game sucks, than man I don't want to put $300 more dollars into models just to have a proper game. I also think that many had built up 8th edition as this magic bullet that was going to be 7th edition with all the errata changed and tighter rules. 8th may have the tightest rules gw has ever produced outside of bloodbowl. But for too many the radical changes were too much and I think the investment for many was too much as well.

As to the fanboy aspect of things, GW is a corporation their is a large % of the population that simply don't' like corps. I have to say I have not been a fan of a lot of business decisions GW has made. I also really like Gw's games, I'm not going to feel bad for liking their games, no one else should either. You make excellent points that members of team England's ETC and over the pond podcast say very positive things about rule sets but when others echo they are shouted down. This is stupidity in its simplest form.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was not convincing everyone he doesn't exist, it was giving every yahoo with an internet connection the ability to spread their ignorance on the google. This is often exceedingly true the gaming community. Where the standard GW conversation goes like this "insert random GW positive comment"by standard gamer. The responses will go from intelligent conversation to within 3 posts. "What a bullspit comment, GW is the worst thing ever. Fantasy is a terrible game which they ruined anyway cause that's what GW does, you defending them on it, your a Fanboy...." and it goes on degrading into name calling and GW bashing.

Dave keep fighting the good fight. 8th is a great game, your not a fan boy, and Keep up the fantastic podcast.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm just getting so tired of the negativity since last July. It was there before, but now that people with a platform, be it on an internet forum or on their own podcasts, are not only quitting themselves but trying to take everyone they know with them, it kind of makes me sick. Then someone like me gets on the air twice a month and just keeps gushing about how much fun I'm having and I MUST be of sub-par intelligence or something.

Well written Dave, personally I feel that 8th is a better GAME than 7th was. The cinetmatic quality particularly when playing scenarios is ace and there are fewer certanties than 7th, this all works best when play for 'fun' as opposed to 'tournament style'. As soon as the whole focus is on winning then the game does have some issues like amries consisting of 4 huge mega units.

As for your comments not being taken on merit then once more I agree. I have even found myself having to justify comments by saying that Heelan/Curry (using those 2 names as they are known internationally) etc have said a similar thing but that influence has hit me at times when Bobo (Unseen Lerker) has asked my opinon and I begin to wonder why before having to stop myself and say 'hey, my opinion counts and sometimes I can even be right'

Well said, Dave. Really, I couldn't agree more. I've never played other editions of WFB, so I feel like I'm coming into 8th without a lot of leftover edition baggage. As such, I have to say that I really feel the rules work very well to create a fun and interesting game ... not an accurate tactical assessment simulation, a GAME. *shrug*
